During World War II, Prokosch was cultural attaché of the American Legation in Sweden, and he remained in Europe after the war. His reputation continued to flourish, and there he wrote most of his 16 novels, including two more journey-novels. He published four collections of poems and translated the poetry of Euripides, Louise Labé, and Friedrich Hölderlin.

The Idols of the Cave are the idols of the individual man. For every one (besides the errors common to human nature in general) has a cave or den of his own, which refracts and discolours the light of nature….So that the spirit of man is in fact a thing variable and full of perturnation, and governed as if were by chance.
